Should I be able to get a continuity reading on my multimeter through the HT screw in pick up on a villiers engine I’m getting a reading on the actual cable but not through the pick up it’s the type with a carbon rod

If I’m following you correctly , you are not getting any continuity from the plug connector to through the ht lead and the coil secondary to earth, suggesting a break in the secondary winding. No continuity between earth and where the ht lead connects to the coil would confirm a bad coil. If it’s an “old, old “ Villiers coil of unknown history , the chances are that it’s suffering from internal corrosion of the secondary winding . Are you getting any continuity from the primary winding - earth to the low tension wire from the coil to the points when disconnected from the points and condenser.
Old Villiers coils with internal corrosion can, and do, give various unhelpful readings due to the thin secondary windings breaking and then fusing together - for a while !!
A proper coil tester is useful but can push an iffy coil “ over the edge”,  however a “ known good “ substitute coil can save a lot of angst !

The coil is definitely faulty but I have found that the cheap Taiwanese replacements have worked well enough,no my query is should I have a continuity reading between the carbon rod and the screw that the HT lead fits into

hopefully an image of the pick up will clarify what I’m rambling about
