Ransomes Sixteen

I picked up a Ransomes Sixteen a few days ago and whilst degreasing and gently power washing, a port on the cylinder block was packed with wadding ( picture 3 ). Is there something missing ? .

I have no knowledge of the Norton Villiers engines.

Thank you.

Looks like the crank case breather mounting but I think that it should have a one way breather valve to allow the crank case to vent on the down stroke of the piston but to seal on the upstroke creating some negative pressure to help keep the engine oil tight.

I believe that the "port" should have a small housing with a ball valve and possibly some "wadding" to filter the in going air. I'll try and find an image.

Edit. this is a typical Villiers breather valve but not the exact one for your engine.

I am inclined to agree that it is breather valve. It is possible that the cover pinged of while you were pressure washing the machine if so a check around the machine and the area of your backyard where you washed it down might prove useful.

Many thanks yet  again, Wristpin for taking the time to download the breather valve assembly ; now I know what I should be looking for and shall take Hillsider's advice to have a scout about  tomorrow ,where I was washing down the lawnmower earlier today.
