Old recoil starter on Atco b12

I have a problem with my recoil starter on the Atco b12 it started then stopped so I pulled on the starter it engaged with the engine something went bang and the starter will not engage anymore. It looks like a spacer must be missing. I can't believe the starter prong has broken off. I took the starter off but can't see any problem. Engine will start just using a rope round the engine pulley.

Any ideas folks?

Problem sorted!  I had a good look at at the mower today, from the front, and noticed the cowling was not right, it had pulled away from the engine making a gap big enough to prevent the recoil pulley engaging with the starter pin. What gave me a clue about the problem was when I looked at my Suffolk Punch set up.  So I loosened the four bolts and reseated the cowling. Starter now works as it should. I now have to sort out some Metric and AF Spanners, as my usual ones are whitworth, and pinch these bolts up tight. Whilst I had the recoil pulley apart I fitted a new replacement cord and plastic puller, much better than the short string and old pipe it was tied to. Hope this helps others with a similar problem
