Bearing for an 14\" Atco cylinder mower?

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.
I have an elderly 14\" Atco cylinder mower and a bearing on the cylinder has broken up.
The details on it are "ALS44

Does that appear to be the correct identification?

Don't really recognise that, but depending on just which 14" Atco you have, it will either be an RLS4 or RLS5 (also known as NLJ1/2 & NLJ5/8) and you should change both bearings.

Many thanks for that.  Could you possibly tell me how I can identify which one it is RLS4 or RLS5 and many thanks.

Are you sure about the ALS44. The dimensions look HUGE for the application!

May be an ALS4 ?

Idiot that I am when I asked, "Many thanks for that.  Could you possibly tell me how I can identify which one it is RLS4 or RLS5 and many thanks."

Actually I meant the lawnmower.

Not sure that I understand your rephrased question. When you say 'Atco 14\' it seems that you have a 14 inch Atco and the numbers on the ID tag following 14 should indicate the year of manufacture, such as 1457 for a 1957 machine.

Is that what you're asking?

I certainly do have a 14" ATCO cylinder mower but I have no idea where the identification marks are on it!

If it still exists (and many don't) the ID tag will be on the side plate on the same side as the throttle. Here's a plate from one of mine indicating 1955/1956:

No, nothing like that anywhere.  I found a place near where I live that specializes in all sorts of Bearings so I'll take the shaft over and see if they will check it before I forget how it goes back together but thanks for your help.

As well as the shaft, take the bearing holder and remains of the failed bearing as the inner ( shaft) diameter alone may not be enough for a positive ID.

I sort of hinted on how identify what size of bearings you need, but you must have missed it ;-)

Lets try again.

RLS4 = NLJ1/2 which has a half inch bore

RLS5 = NLJ5/8 which has a five eighths of an inch bore

So measure the size of the shaft the bearing fits onto (in imperial measurement)

Failing that, post a picture of your mower and I will tell you what bearing you require (unless Wristpin beats me to it)
