Atco De luxe 17" mower sprocket removal
Hi,
I'm trying to remove the cutting cylinder from my mower but I'm unsure on how to remove the double sprocket on one end of the cutting cylinder. There's a larger sprocket on the bottom with a smaller one located on top. They both come as one unit. There are two holes in the sprocket where it looks like a tool fits to wind the sprocket of the reverse thread.
Anyone help me on how I can remove this sprocket?
Many thanks in advance
Allen.

Hi Wristpin,
Thanks for the reply. I will connect the other end of the cylinder back on to the mower and jam it as described. I have tried to move the sprocket with the drive chain but awkward as the cylinder tries to turn as one end is disconnected.
Maybe there is a gap in the market for a sprocket gripper!!
Thanks for the reply again. Appreciate it

Fine, it will be tight! My "gripper" is about 20" long and the mower will often tip back until the handle bars are on the ground!
Sprocket removal
You're right in thinking that it has a left hand thread so that it self tightens under drive. So lock the cylinder with a piece of wood and turn the sprocket clockwise . Don't think that there was ever an official service tool for the job but the factory may have made use of those two holes. I started off by using a chain wrench but later made a "spocket gripper" - long bar with pegs to engage the sprocket teeth. It was my intention to make an adjustable one for different sized sprockets but as the ornamental iron work shop next door always had off cuts it was too easy to just make one to suit the job - hence I have a collection!
